COVID Cases in India: Tracking the Pandemic Landscape Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has deeply impacted India. With over 45 million confirmed cases and roughly 533,000 deaths recorded by May 2025, India ranks among the countries most affected worldwide. The virus first appeared in India on 30 January 2020, when students returning from Wuhan tested positive in Kerala.
